About Me

Welcome! I am Dr. Audrey Gelfand. I am a clinical Psychologist with a Ph.D. from Hofstra University and a master's degree in School Psychology. I have been in private practice since 2000. Before that, I worked as a school psychologist and in a day treatment program for young children. In my clinical practice I work with children, adolescents, and adults. My training is within the cognitive behavioral model of treatment; however, I bring many other things to treatment and develop an individual style based on what I determine a client needs. My work isn't cookie cutter or developed from a workbook. Therapy with me is based upon 25 years of experience and a skill in putting together various styles and interventions from different perspectives. I believe in each person's individuality and in identifying strengths and talents so we can build upon those. I also believe in utilizing a person's natural support system (friends and family) whenever possible. I work extensively with local Psychiatrists when medication is a part of treatment and can also work with school psychologists or social workers when needed. Compassion and understanding are important to my work and I think it's critical to develop a trusting relationship with my patients. This trust allows us to work together to bring about change. Therapy is very challenging and can feel daunting to new patients, however, in a supportive environment, it is extremely helpful. I am very grateful to those people who put their trust in me.

About My Patients

Patients come to me from all walks of life. I treat people of all ages. When patients are too young to come to therapy, I often work on a consultation model where I will work with caregivers instead of directly working with the patient. I treat people with many different emotional and behavioral challenges such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Autism
  • Attention Deficit Disorder
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Trauma
  • LGBTQ identity
  • Gender Dysphoria
  • Sexuality
  • Illness and Chronic disease
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Divorce

Insurance and Payment

Payment for therapy services is due at the time of service. Although I do not accept insurance, I accept cash, check, credit card, Venmo and Zelle. All patients are given monthly statements that can be submitted to an isurance company for reimbursement.
